Mineralriket
Mineralriket Wermlandsberg (Mineral Kingdom) is a geographical area renowned for its geological heritage, making it one of the most mineral-rich places in the world. Located in eastern Bergslagen, Filipstad Municipality, this area has been mined for nearly 500 years in the search for iron and manganese ore, silver and copper ore, dolomite, and many other minerals. These minerals, containing metals with numerous applications, helped build entire communities in Wermlandsberg, the oldest known name of the area.
History
As early as the beginning of the 19th century, researchers began to uncover the wealth of minerals in the bedrock here, and the first scientific publications on the area's mineral richness were authored.
Today, 200 years later, the area is known as one of the most mineral-rich in the world, with over 400 different minerals discovered, and more than 100 of these are so-called type minerals, meaning they were first discovered here. Several of these minerals have not been found anywhere else in the world since. The number of minerals continues to grow as new discoveries are made and sent for analysis, for example, to the Swedish Museum of Natural History. As recently as April 2024, a completely new mineral from Långban was approved by the scientific community.
