A new geopark on its way
With the project name Mineralriket, several actors in Filipstad municipality are investing in Filipstads Bergslag to be classified as a Swedish Geopark. A process lasting several years is now entering a new phase, thanks to granted project funds from LEADER.
Interest in geology and geotourism has increased in recent years. Filipstad would become the 4th geopark in Sweden if everything goes as it should. Långban is 1st on the top 100 list of the world's most mineral-rich places, according to mindat.org, which is a kind of Wikipedia for minerals. The same list also includes Harstigen (Persberg) and Jakobsberg (Nordmark), as the only places in Scandinavia. The project extends to 2025 and the ultimate goal is to submit an application to SGU, Sweden's Geological Survey, to become a Swedish Geopark.
